Open Rehearsals | Mary & Her Monster

I’m working on a show. And I’d love your help.

Me?

Yes you! You might be . . .

  • Concerned about tech and capitalism building a world that isn’t fit for living in.

  • An activist, facilitator, or community organiser trying to build a world that supports solidarity, creativity, community, or wellbeing.

  • A parent feeling isolated and unseen raising a life while maintaining your own.

  • A woman in tech disillusioned by the tech industry and advocating for change.

  • An artist, writer, or theatre maker interested in interactive formats.

  • Simply curious and most welcome!

What’s the show?

Mary & Her Monster explores mothering and techno-capitalism (Big Tech) as contrasting ways of creating and caring for life. We’re using Mary Shelley, the women in her life, and the story of Frankenstein as our guides.

I’m taking the show to the Pleasance Futures Festival (three weeks of pioneering, future-focused performance makers) on 1st + 2nd December, but first, I’m opening up my process and inviting the public to join a series of open rehearsals.

Catherine Duquette, wearing an iridescent long dress with puffy sleeves, stands smiling at the camera on a busy London street. Around her are the blurry figures of people in regular casual clothes walking and cycling.

What happens in an open rehearsal?

In each session, we’re going to play and try out various interactive exercises. Some things will work. Some won’t. That’s all part of the process!

Then, through a facilitated discussion, we’ll chat about what you experienced and the themes of the show.

This is an opportunity for you to shape the show, peek inside the artistic process, and imagine a world that better cares for you, others, nature, and life in general. It's a rallying cry for creative process, curiosity, and connection.

Each session is about an hour. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

What do you mean by ‘mothering’ and ‘tech’ as ways of care?

Mothering = any act that births or nurtures life or that creates space for life to thrive (art/community/activism). Advocacy for natural life.

Tech = Big Tech - Google, Elon Musk, AI, Amazon, social media, smart phones, Alexa. Advocates for artificial life.

The open rehearsals will help me understand how these themes show up in your personal lives or in your work.

Catherine offers an exciting social experiment and effective artistic coup.
